“Angry Stripping” a few Sculpin fed Stripers on a Slow Day

Rick and I launched at Basalt boat launch at 11 am and fished till 4. I thought we might pick up a few fish trolling flies around O’Neill Dam where I saw a couple guys catch a couple large fish day before yesterday. We trolled around till 2:00PM without a bump. I figured we would end the day casting flies at the rock wall across from Maderis Launch. Picked up 3 fish on the wall and went home around 4:30. We cleaned two keepers at the dock and found them both stuffed with sculpin! I’m starting to get a feel for stripping flies in winter. I think one needs to put something a little extra into stripping flies for slower moving, sculpin eating stripers. Something along the lines of smaller fatter flies, shorter harder strips, longer more erratic pauses, deeper line zones and fish rock cover bottoms.
