The Forebay – August 24, 2015

I haven’t fished the Forebay for a long time.  While I was in Alberta,  I started to think that trout pull harder than stripers.  I don’t know what came over me.  Today, the stripers had something to prove.  They were in prime shape and fought as good as I can remember.   They treated my eight weight NRX like a a five weight,  I had a hard time turning a couple of them even with a 20 lb leader.   The winds have been odd the last couple weeks.  I have never seen so many windy weekends in August.  Steph tried to go out on Saturday and despite the good wind forecast,  the lake was blowing so hard all day Saturday that they closed it.   Today was freaky calm all day.  Too calm.    I planned on getting on the lake at 8AM since it seems thats when the night winds die down and change directions.   I woke up at 5:00 and checked the wind line and was shocked awake when it reported that it was nearly windless!  I jumped out of bed and got to the lake at 7:00.   The weed lines were visible on the surfaces and I decided to check the islands and freeway trench weed lline first. In past Augusts,  I have done well around the islands and in the weeds.   As soon as I set up on the weed line at 7:00,  the action was fast and furious.   By 10:00 I had 18 to the boat the biggest 22 inches.   The still lake got hot around 11:00 with temperatures reaching the 90’s and little or no breeze.  I fished the deep water and managed a few there but the action slowed way down for the later morning and afternoon.   The fish were there.  I was metering big schools all over the lake with some big fish in them.  I stuck to smaller yellow flies suspending with rattles and a pulse disk,  fast strips with long pauses, T-14.  There is something sexy about a rattled fly with a pusle disk, especially with the visability dropping due to the blue green algae.  I tried some larger flies but felt they weren’t working as well.  The stripers just stopped eating as the day got hot. I ate one of the stripers for dinner and found a 4 inch shad in it while cleaning. The baitfish are getting bigger.

  1. Hey man, I love your videos! Very well done! Do you perhaps have an instagram page for all your fishing pics? You’d probably get a good following.

BTW, what do you mean by “freeway trench weed line”? I’ve done very well fishing the forebay from shore, but I’ll be fishing from my yak from now on. Just trying to learn strategies and tips. Thanks!
